IRC chat on Tuesday! Join us June 19, 2012, 11am California time, 18:00GMT, for our weekly 30 minute setiQuest IRC chat at irc://irc.freenode.net/#setiquest

Or in a browser: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=setiquest
Today's topic can be:

  1. SETICon - I am preparing for that. Need comment on http://setiquest.org/setiquest/seticon-setilive-brochure.pdf
  2. I am trying to make time getting KHRM's distro tested out so I can tell people at SETICon about it and maybe someone will try it.
  3. SETILive Followup progress.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

[11:01am] jrseti_: Hello All!

[11:01am] jrseti_: Hello All! Time for the weekly SETIQuest meeting
[11:01am] jrseti_: See √
[11:01am] jrseti_: See http://setiquest.org/forum/topic/community-meeting-2012-06-19
[11:01am] gliese581c: Title: Community Meeting 2012-06-19 | setiQuest (at setiquest.org)
[11:01am] sigblips: Greetings Earthling.
[11:02am] jrseti_: Ithink it is just you and me today.
[11:02am] jrseti_: I'd like opinions on http://setiquest.org/setiquest/seticon-setilive-brochure.pdf
[11:02am] sigblips: Yup, just us, so far.
[11:02am] jrseti_: Let me explain the context:
[11:03am] jrseti_: SETICon is this weekend and we will be showing odd SETILive all weekend. This is a simple brochure we hand out at the SETILive screen display.
[11:03am] jrseti_: We were told to make everything really simple. No equations, no tech discussions in the handouts
[11:04am] jrseti_: They are catering to a more generalist crowd
[11:05am] sigblips: 4) The SSL certificate for http://setistars.org is invalid. No one is going to trust this site with their credit card and donate. This needs to be fixed pronto.
[11:05am] gliese581c: Title: Setistars (at setistars.org)
[11:06am] jrseti_: I'll send off an email NOW
[11:07am] sigblips: Your SETIcon brochure looks nice and simple.
[11:09am] jrseti_: I sent an email to the person in charge of setistars. Thanks for the notice!
[11:10am] jrseti_: I'll now have Jill look at the brochure. I remember going to SETICon several years ago and this is the level of information that most will find useful
[11:10am] sigblips: setistars.org launched almost exactly one year ago. I'm guessing they only purchased the SSL certificate for one year.
[11:11am] jrseti_: BYes, 1 year ago!
[11:11am] jrseti_: I made the brochure with an open source program called scribus
[11:11am] jrseti_: very nice
[11:12am] sigblips: It looks nice. You should make some http://baudline.com brochures for me!
[11:12am] jrseti_: Someday...
[11:14am] jrseti_: I ran into a bit of a snag with KHRMs distro. The SSH would not set up correctly. Still looking into it. May just be my fault.
[11:15am] jrseti_: I'd like to have this in the bag so i can inform them at SETiCon, in case I'm asked about a distro.
[11:15am] sigblips: Is this with VMware?
[11:15am] jrseti_: Yes
[11:15am] jrseti_: Actually - VMFusion
[11:16am] sigblips: Hmmm, susestudio seems like a wonderful idea, too bad its implementation is half-baked.
[11:17am] jrseti_: Well, everything is difficult
[11:18am] sigblips: Another problem I've been having with susestudio is the inability to configure Linux / X11 boot up options. They don't make any sort of real configurability easy.
[11:18am] jrseti_: Thanks for looking into that - I would have assumed that most everyone would want to do that.
[11:20am] jrseti_: Followups ......
[11:20am] sigblips: All that susestudio is is a glorified zypper package manager. I want to easily be able to configure things like the xorg.conf file and rebuild a customized kernel.
[11:21am] jrseti_: Still - problems on their end - they are almost ready to test - the main programmer was on vacation. Now all we need is testing time again.
[11:22am] sigblips: Will followups be common or will they be a rare event?
[11:22am] Gamegoofs2 joined the chat room.
[11:23am] jrseti_: I think a common event, one an hour?
[11:23am] khrm joined the chat room.
[11:23am] jrseti_: IAt least once a day or more
[11:23am] sigblips: Hello Gamegoofs2 and khrm. Here is a link to what you have missed. http://irc.sigblips.com/setiQuest/2012/setiquest.06-19-2012.log
[11:24am] sigblips: I wonder what the odds are of actually detecting SETI this way?
[11:24am] jrseti_: It may help with RFI detection
[11:25am] sigblips: The RFI is already easy to detect.
[11:25am] jrseti_: No, not really in the crowded bands. The DXs have a problem with really crowsed bands
[11:26am] jrseti_: Gamegoofs2 - it has been a long time
[11:26am] Gamegoofs2: It sure has. School got busy.
[11:26am] sigblips: Are the DX's being overloaded by detecting too much RFI?
[11:27am] jrseti_: Sigblips: yes, and we have been skipping those bands in the past.
[11:27am] khrm left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[11:28am] jrseti_: Gamegoofs2: I am trying to learn Unity3d to create a 3D environment and maybe some game
[11:28am] Gamegoofs2: A game for what?
[11:29am] jrseti_: I was thinking a SETI related game for kids
[11:29am] jrseti_: Have you had any experience with Unity3D?
[11:29am] Gamegoofs2: Sounds interesting. Can I help?
[11:30am] Gamegoofs2: None, but I took a game programming course last semester.
[11:31am] jrseti_: Download Unity3D and view some tutorial and get back to me. Luckily the base version is very good and free.
[11:31am] Gamegoofs2: Alright when I get home I'll take a look.
[11:32am] jrseti_: NOTE: We have changed these meetings to 30 minute
[11:33am] jrseti_: Yes, have a look and tell me your thoughts during the next IRC chat
[11:33am] Gamegoofs2: Ok.
[11:34am] jrseti_: Are we done with the meeting today?
[11:35am] sigblips: I imported http://setiquest.org/wiki/index.php/Site_Map and http://setiquest.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ they are rough and need some work.
[11:35am] gliese581c: Title: Site Map - setiquest wiki (at setiquest.org)
[11:36am] jrseti_: Looks nice so far!
[11:37am] sigblips: They are a start.
[11:38am] leash joined the chat room.
[11:39am] jrseti_: Hello leash - I am meeting with Jonathan Fay this week about MWWT
[11:39am] leash: jrseti- Awesome. I want to see that go somewhere.
[11:39am] jrseti_: Me too. He asked for a list of the Kepler planets - I assume he wants to display them in MWWT.
[11:40am] leash: You still have the original list, right?
[11:40am] jrseti_: yes
[11:40am] sigblips: Quick question: I don't know much about MWWT. How is it different or better than Google Sky?
[11:41am] leash: sigblips - It's much more detailed from a scientific perspective.
[11:41am] sigblips: Thanks.
[11:41am] jrseti_: It is a competitor - sort of. The really good version only runs on Windows. The web client is crippled a bit.
[11:42am] leash: It also allows for experienced users to upload their own data to it.
[11:42am] jrseti_: Leash is right
[11:42am] sigblips: Wow! I learned something today. Thanks again.
[11:42am] leash: Sigblips - But that takes some time to master.
[11:43am] jrseti_: yes, it is not easy
[11:46am] jrseti_: OK all - I have to go. Thanks for the meeting. I'll have a lot to talk about next week after SETICon.
[11:46am] sigblips: Good meeting. I'll post the transcript in the forum. Bye.
[11:46am] leash: Bye.
[11:46am] jrseti_ left the chat room. (Remote host closed the connection)
[11:46am] leash left the chat room. (Quit: Page closed)
