[11:00am] jrseti_: Hello all
[11:01am] sigblips: Welcome to the 99th setiQuest IRC community meeting. http://setiquest.org/wiki/index.php/Community_meeting#IRC_meeting_transc...
[11:01am] jrseti_: Just Sigblips?
[11:01am] jrseti_: I neglected to create a meetings page on the forum
[11:01am] jrseti_: Darn it!
[11:01am] jrseti_: I am at SETI today
[11:03am] jrseti_: I was just in a meeting reviewing an iPad app someone developed for us and wants us to publish
[11:03am] jrseti_: Sort of related to the Drake equation
[11:03am] jrseti_: We have suggestions for the guy to make it better.
[11:03am] jrseti_: So, anything to discuss?
[11:04am] sigblips: Well, that is SETI related. Have you seen the on-line Drake calculator that was in the news last week?
[11:04am] jrseti_: no, give me the link
[11:05am] sigblips: Let me look for. I wonder if they are the same people that made that iPad app?
[11:07am] jrseti_: The app we were reviwing was more of a simulator showing potential radio lifespans and how the signals would intersect earth
[11:07am] sigblips: I think this was it. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20120821-how-many-alien-worlds-exist
[11:07am] jrseti_: needs some work
[11:07am] sigblips: Is it interactive and more than a simple calculator?
[11:09am] jrseti_: Hard to explain. I'll show it to you after the next iteration
[11:09am] sigblips: OK.
[11:10am] jrseti_: We had SonATA hardware problems last week - missed several days of observing
[11:10am] sigblips: Yes I noticed. Looks like a beamformer went bad,
[11:10am] jrseti_: A couple of the iBobs were not working. Not sure how they got it going again
[11:11am] jrseti_: did you see any weird waterfalls?
[11:11am] sigblips: Just a lot more RFI in a single beam.
[11:12am] jrseti_: We will be having a meeting this afternoon discussing what the problem and fix was
[11:12am] sigblips: Which makes me think that most of the RFI that the ATA sees is generated internally but I've thought this for the past year+.
[11:13am] sigblips: Please let us know what the problem and fix was.
[11:13am] jrseti_: OK
[11:13am] jrseti_: Also, next Tuesday we shut down the observing for 2 weeks!
[11:13am] jrseti_: The new air conditioning system is to be installed
[11:14am] sigblips: Kind of like the LHC shutting down for repairs.
[11:14am] sigblips: Cool. (:
[11:14am] jrseti_: But their AC is probably a lot more complex
[11:15am] sigblips: Super conducting magnets ...
[11:16am] jrseti_: Hopefully I am going to start some CASPER hardware training next week. Learn how to use the Roach2 boards
[11:17am] sigblips: Sounds fun. Have you looked in to cost of the Simulink tools? They are about $5000+.
[11:17am] jrseti_: They told me to plan on $10k
[11:18am] sigblips: Yikes!
[11:18am] jrseti_: But, the guys at BWRC at Berkeley are going help me at their lab
[11:18am] jrseti_: So we don't have to buy anything for now
[11:18am] sigblips: I look forward to reading your FULL report! (:
[11:19am] jrseti_: Me too!
[11:19am] sigblips: I found out who was responsible for the Arecibo Wow! tweets in space reply.
[11:20am] jrseti_: who?
[11:20am] sigblips: National Geographic's "Chasing UFOs" series. http://www.technewsworld.com/story/35-Years-Later-Earth-Finally-Returns-...
[11:20am] sigblips: The SETI Institute's Douglas Vakoch is mentioned in that article.
[11:21am] sigblips: I still don't think they should of transmitted a reply without my (and the rest of the World's) permission.
[11:22am] jrseti_: I'll probably see him today. I doubt he had anything to do with it.
[11:22am] jrseti_: Did anyone in the media complain?
[11:22am] sigblips: Don't think he did. They just quoted him.
[11:23am] sigblips: Seems like the media loved it.
[11:23am] jrseti_: Maybe you should complain on your blog?
[11:24am] jrseti_: Or your congressman!
[11:24am] sigblips: That's right, SigBlips vs. National Geographic and the Arecibo observatory!
[11:25am] jrseti_: Good press for Baudline!
[11:26am] sigblips: If I complain to my congressman they might cut SETI's federal funding. Ohh wait, they've already done that!
[11:26am] jrseti_: So, no problem!
[11:28am] jrseti_: Anything else to discuss? Sorry - not much of a meeting. I'll be more prepared next time.
[11:28am] sigblips: Nope nothing else. What do you mean? It was a great meeting.
[11:28am] jrseti_: Thanks
[11:29am] jrseti_: Till next week?...
[11:29am] jrseti_: bye!
[11:29am] sigblips: See you next week.
