Project Overview - Virtual 3D Antenna Array Visualization Toolkit

We would like to create a 3D virtual model of the Allen Telescope Array.

The Project

We had previously defined this project to have a much wider scope - full 3D virtual immersion, or at least as much immersion as possible. Several people seemed interested in the project, but no one was interested in tackling it. The reason was probably because it was too large a project.

In a nutshell here is what we want to eventually end up with: A virtual 3D world that you can roam around in on your PC or mobile device. The location is the Allen Telescope Array.

Along those lines we will start out with the basics. This project will start with creating a 3D model of the antenna. If we can get a nice accurate 3D model file that will work in Unity3D we will be far ahead of the game.

The 3D antenna models we have are available:

  1. wget http://setiquest.org/sonata_files/antenna_models/antenna.IGS
  2. wget http://setiquest.org/sonata_files/antenna_models/antenna.wrl

Can you use Blender to ingest one of these files, clean it up, and export it to a format that is compatible with Unity3D?

Tools to use

We will use free tools.

  1. To create 3D models we will use Blender. It is free and you can get it at Blender.org
  2. The 3D environment will be Unity 3D. It is free and you can get it at Unity 3D. So the 3D model created needs to be compatible with Unity3D.

Can you help?
